Energy Minister Visits U.S.

Georgian Energy Minister Nika Gilauri left for the United States on May 3 for a working visit. The Energy Ministry reported that Gilauri will hold talks with representatives from the General Electric and Pratt & Whitney companies over the possible purchase of gas turbine electricity generators.

The Georgian government plans to allocate USD 140 million for purchasing three gas turbine generators in an attempt to reduce the electricity shortage in the country, the Georgian Energy Ministry reported.

Talks with representatives of the World Bank and USIAD are also planned during this visit to the United States.

Gilauri said at a news conference in Tbilisi on May 2 that Georgia plans to resume construction of the Hudon hydro power plant in western Georgia. It is expected that the Minister will push the issue of financing this multi-million project during his talks with the World Bank officials.

Construction of the Hudon power plant was halted in early 90s after protests from environmental groups.
