Churches were packed overnight on May 1 in Georgia’s capital city, Tbilisi, as most Georgians celebrated Orthodox Easter.

The newly built Holy Trinity Cathedral in Tbilisi was the main site for Easter services in Georgia, where the Patriarch of the Georgian Orthodox Church, Ilia II, delivered a prayer. Georgian Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze, Prime Minister Zurab Nogaideli and other officials attended this service.

President Saakashvili spent Easter night in the flood-stricken Svaneti region and attended Easter service at one of the local churches there.
