Ukraine Ready to Send Observers to Russo-Georgian Border

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Boris Tarasyuk did not rule out the possibility of sending Ukrainian observers to monitor the situation on the Russian-Georgian border, news agency Regnum reported on April 20.

?We have previously discussed this issue with [Georgian Foreign Minister] Salome Zourabichvili over Ukraine?s participation in the project. The Ukrainian side expressed a political will and readiness to participate in this,? Boris Tarasyuk said at a joint news briefing with visiting Georgian Foreign Minister in Kiev on April 20.

Reportedly, during a meeting of the foreign ministers of the European Union’s 25 member countries in Luxembourg, the EU refused to take over the OSCE operation under its flag.

This decision quashes all attempts by the Georgian government to seek an international presence and monitoring at the Russo-Georgian border. The OSCE was forced to terminate its monitoring following a Russian veto in December.
