Three Experts from EU to Observe Russo-Georgian Border
The European Union?s Special Representative to the South Caucasus Heikki Talvitie said at a news briefing in Tbilisi on April 8 that three civilian experts from the EU will observe the situation on the Russo-Georgian border within the next three months.
Talvitie also said that the main purpose of his visit to Tbilisi was to introduce this three-member delegation, which will report about the situation on the border to the EU. Only afterwards will it be decided what kind of further steps the EU will take in this respect, Heikki Talvitie said.
“Their task is to make an assessment of the situation on the Georgian-Russian border after the OSCE has left; also [to make] an assessment on needs for the Georgian border guard system to be improved. After three months these three people will make a report to Brussels,” Talvitie added.
Georgia requested that the European Union monitor the situation on the Russian-Georgian border after Russia vetoed discussion of the issue regarding prolongation of the OSCE Border Monitoring Operation (BMO) at the OSCE Permanent Council session on December 30.
