EU Delegation to Visit Russo-Georgian Border

European Union?s Special Representative to the South Caucasus Heikki Talvitie arrived in Georgia on April 5. He is accompanied by a three-member group of experts from the European Union, who will observe the situation on the Daghestani, Chechen and Ingush sections of the Russian-Georgian border.

The European Union?s foreign policy chief Javier Solana said on March 18 that the EU intends to send two or three civilians to observe the situation in Georgia in areas around the country, including near the Russian border.

?We will study what we can do in this direction,? Heikki Talvitie told Mze television on April 5.

Georgia requested the European Union to monitor the situation on the Russian-Georgian border after Russia vetoed discussion of the issue regarding prolongation of the OSCE Border Monitoring Operation (BMO) at the OSCE Permanent Council session on December 30.
