Would-Be Medical Students Send Open Letter to Saakashvili

The students of the State Medical Collage sent an open letter to the President of Georgia, demanding support and the ?adoption of a compromising decision? from him.

?We want to believe that our President will take our problem to heart and make a compromising decision,? reads the open letter, published by the daily Resonance on March 26.

The students of the State Medical College are protesting against the Georgian Education Ministry?s decision to abolish a privilege for the State Medical College students, which envisaging their enrolment into the State Medical University without them taking entrance exams, given the completion of three years of study at the State Medical College.

According to the new Education Law, all potential students wanting to be enrolled in a higher education center have to pass standardized nationwide tests, which, according to the Education Ministry, rules out any possibility of corrupt transactions between the universities? administrations and would-be students.

?The contract between us [the students] and the State Medical University administration probably really contains some flaws, but why did the Education Minister [Kakha Lomaia] recall it three months before the examinations and why should we answer for the ineffective work of the Ministry?,? the letter reads.

The students claim that Kakha Lomaia ?infringes on the students? rights [and] cannot retain the position of Education Minister.?
