S.Ossetia, Abkhazia Leaders Might Offer “State Union” to Georgia – Source
The Russian daily Kommersant reports, based on unnamed sources close to the separatist leadership of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, that the leaders of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, who are both currently visiting Moscow, might offer “state union” to Georgia, patterned after the union of Serbia and Montenegro. Such a union would foresee relations between the equal parties to essentially establish a loose confederation.
The daily speculates that Moscow realizes that this plan is unacceptable to official Tbilisi, but that the plan aims to show that progress is being made in the peace process as a result of Russian intervention, following the repeated failures of several peace offers Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has offered the secessionist leaderships of S.Ossetia and Abkhazia. Tbilisi accused Russia of inducing these secessionists to stonewall the proposals.
