Abkhaz Sources: Abkhaz Helicopter Fired on Georgian Ship

According to Apsnypress quoting the source at the Abkhaz security ministry, Abkhaz coast guard vessels noticed a Georgian cutter near Sukhumi at 12.30 Moscow time (GMT+3) on March 16. The vessel did not respond to the Abkhaz ships, and left the “territorial waters of Abkhazia” after an Abkhaz military helicopter opened fire on it, sources at Abkhaz security ministry say.

Georgian officials have not commented on these statements. The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) military balance data for 2003 lists no military helicopters in Abkhazia’s arsenal.
