Interior Minister: Human Rights Record Improved

Georgian Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili said on March 1 that human rights protection “in the law enforcement agencies has significantly improved in recent months.”

Vano Merabishvili was commenting on an annual human right report issued by the U.S. Department of State on February 28, which notes that “although there were improvements in some areas, serious problems remained” the government’s human rights record in Georgia. Particularly, the report notes continued “police brutality” and torture detainees by the law enforcement officers.

Secretary of Georgian National Security Council Gela Bezhuashvili said on March 1, that the U.S. Department of State’s report “contains both many objective and subjective criticism.”

“We will prepare our position over this issue and send it to the U.S. Department of State,” he added.
