New Chairman of the Supreme Court Approved

The Parliament endorsed Kote Kublashvili as the new Chairman of the Supreme Court of Georgia for a 10-year term on February 23.

The New Rights opposition faction, which was against this nomination, abstained from voting.

Kote Kublashvili said at the Parliament session that he will focus “on perfecting and strengthening the judiciary system’s independence, as well as increasing the public’s confidence towards the judiciary [branch].”

Kote Kublashvili, 32, is a lawyer by education who also served as chief of Georgia’s Development and Reform Fund, which was set up last year to manage the distribution of supplemental salaries to Georgian state officials through foreign donations and private money.

Kote Kublashvili was President Saakashvili’s deputy when the latter served as Justice Minister of Georgia in 2001.
