Russia Responds to Georgia’s UN Envoy Criticism

In an information note issued on January 28 the Russian Foreign Ministry dismissed Georgian representative to the UN Revaz Adamia’s allegations that the Russian side blocked him from participation in a UN Security Council session which focused on the Abkhaz conflict on January 25.

“When the report of the UN Secretary General over the prolongation of the UN mission’s mandate in particular regions are being discussed, the session of the UN Security Council are held behind closed doors. The issue of prolongation of a mandate of the UN Observer Mission to Georgia was not an exception in this regard. Hence, speculations that Russia blocked the Georgian representative from participating in the session of the Security Council are not true,” the Russian Foreign Ministry stated.

Georgia’s UN representative Revaz Adamia said at a news conference on January 26 that Russia is undermining the peace process in breakaway Abkhazia.

“Is the Georgian ambassador so dangerous to Russia? What can the Georgian ambassador say that the Russian delegation doesn’t like so much? The truth — the truth about the situation in Abkhazia,” Revaz Adamia said.

The Georgian Ambassador also made a written appeal to the UN Security Council on January 26 in which he criticized Moscow’s role, as well as the activities of the Russian peacekeepers in the conflict zone.
