Ex-Governor’s Assets Confiscated

On November 5 the Supreme Court of Georgia overruled an appeal by the lawyers of the ex-govener of Shida Kartli Levan Mamaladze over a conciliation decision by the Tbilisi District Court, which has ordered to confiscate the assets of Mamaladze and his family.

The General Prosecutor’s Office employed an anti-corruption law to sue Mamaladze in June. The law envisages the confiscation of assets of those officials and ex-officials who fail to prove their assets were acquired legally.

The confiscated assets include Mamaladze’s apartment house in downtown Tbilisi, a villa outside Tbilisi and land in the villages of Tsavkisi and Shindisi.

Levan Mamaladze was one of the most influential figures in ex-President Eduard Shevardnadze’s government. Currently Levan Mamaladze, who fled Georgia after last year’s Rose Revolution, is wanted by the Georgian law enforcers for alleged misuse of power.
