Controversial Law on Adjara’s Constitutional Powers Endorsed

The Parliament approved with 173 votes to 9 with the first hearing on June 25 a draft constitutional law over distribution powers Georgian central authorities and Adjara Autonomous Republic.

According to the document Adjara will have one chamber legislative body and executive government with the Prime Minister, whose candidacy will be proposed to the Adjarian Parliament for approval.

Georgian President has right to disband both the Adjarian Parliament, as well as the cabinet; while the Georgian Parliament is able to suspend legislative acts adopted by the Adjarian Parliament, according to the draft law.

Opponents of the draft law, including the New Rights opposition faction, as well as the Republican Party, claim that the proposed document downgrades Adjara’s autonomous rights and puts the region under the direct presidential rule.
