Detectives of Adjarian Students’ Case Remanded in Custody

Court remanded in pre-trial detention on March 9 detectives Zaza Meskhi, Mamuka Mdinaradze and Giorgi Dzidziguri on charges of negligence.

They are accused of misuse of power as they released on February 27 two Adjarian students, who were arrested in Tbilisi on February 24 on suspicion of illegal possession of weapons.

Two Adjarian students left Tbilisi on the same day, despite they were restrained from leaving the capital and now refuse to arrive in the capital city for further interrogation.

The arrest of the Adjarian students, which also are the members of the Adjarian leader Aslan Abashidze’s party Revival Union, caused further tensions between Tbilisi and Batumi, as Adjarian authorities claimed that the arrest was politically-motivated.

After the students arrived in Batumi, Aslan Abashidze thanked Prime Minister Zurab Zhvania “for facilitating release of boys.”

There are also some unofficial reports of the Georgian media that Patriarch of the Georgian Orthodox Church Illia II and German ambassador to Georgia Uwe Schramm also mediated release of two Adjarian students.

Three detectives, who were investigating the case of alleged procession of arms by the Adjarian students, they decided to release students upon the request of some high officials; however detectives refused to name them.
