Georgian Energy Minister Visits Moscow

Georgian Energy Minister Nika Gilauri left for the Russian Federation today to hold talks over further cooperation in an energy sector.

The issue of rehabilitation of the Enguri hydro power plant will be discussed during the visit.

Enguri hydroelectric station, which is located on the administrative border between breakaway Abkhazia and the rest of Georgia, is the largest in the country and produces 700 megawatt of electricity per day.

Georgia’s breakaway region of Abkhazia also receives electricity from the Enguri station. Currently Georgia receives 220 megawatt from this plant.

The rehabilitation of power facilities in Abkhazia, including the Enguri hydro power plant, is one of the conditions of the Sochi agreement achieved on 7 March 2003 by ex-President Shevardnadze and his Russian counterpart Putin.

During the talks between Georgian’s new President Mikheil Saakashvili and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, the sides agreed to follow provisions of the Sochi agreement.
