New Rights against Holding Parliamentary Elections in March

Leader of the New Rights party Davit Gamkrelidze, which is the opposition to the current authorities raised concern today over holding of parliamentary elections in March.

Interim President Nino Burjanadze said she would set a date of the repeat parliamentary elections “today, or maybe tomorrow.”  It is expected that Burjanadze will set the elections for March.

The New Rights leader said that if the elections were held in March there would be only one party represented in the new Parliament. He said that more time is needed to prepare for the elections.

It is widely expected that the coalition of Mikheil Saakashvili’s party the National Movement and the Burjanadze-Democrats, led by Nino Burjanadze and Zurab Zhvania, the State Minister, will win the parliamentary elections.

The OSCE recommended Georgia not to hold parliamentary elections before March.
