Abashidze Threatens to Boycott the Elections

Leader of Adjara Autonomous Republic Aslan Abashidze demanded from the central authorities of Georgia to hold the presidential and parliamentary elections in June, 2004.

?Otherwise we will not participate in the elections,? Russian news agency Itar-Tass quoted Aslan Abashidze.

Abashidze added that Georgia is not ready for holding the presidental elections on January 4.

The Central Election Commission (CEC) set January 25 as a date for holding repeat parliamentary elections, as court canceled results of the November 2 parliamentary elections.

According to the election code the CEC should appoint repeat elections within the two months; however the President has the right to postpone the vote.

Thus the CEC sent a letter to the Interim President Nino Burjanadze urging for postponing of the parliamentary elections. As the CEC claims there is no sufficient time to properly prepare for the parliamentary elections.

Now it is up to the Interim President to decide the final date of the parliamentary elections.
