Opposition Demands Postponement of Elections in Rustavi

The representatives of the opposition National Movement party blocked today the Rustavi district election commission to hamper the distribution of ballot papers among the precincts.

They demanded postponement of elections in the city due to the mess in voter lists.

Chairman of the Rustavi district election commission Mamuka Nikolaishvili said he has not violated the law, since he had the right to distribute ballot papers.

The law-enforcement agencies have been mobilized at the district election commission; however the representatives of the National Movement do not let them in.

Chairperson of the Central Election Commission Nana Devdariani also arrived in Rustavi and met with the chairman of the district commission.

The MP candidates in the Rustavi single-mandate constituency also urged on October 31 to postpone the parliamentary elections in Rustavi due to mass inaccuracies in voter lists.

Final decision about the postponement should be made by the President of Georgia. However, Shevardnadze is against the postponement, saying the elections should be held in due terms.

The ballot papers have already been delivered to two precincts of Rustavi.
