CEC Rejects Fugitive ex-Security Minister to Run for MP

The Central Election Commission (CEC) rejected today appeal of ex-security minister Igor Giorgadze, wanted for terrorist attack against President Shevardnadze, to run for November 2 parliamentary elections.

According to the CEC Giorgadze’s candidature was rejected because he did not live in Georgia for past two years.

Under the legislation of Georgia, a candidate for MP should live in Georgia for past two years.

In his registration appeal Giorgadze claimed that he lived in the Znauri district of Georgia’s breakaway South Ossetia during past two years.

Igor Giorgadze is wanted by the Georgian authorities for organizing a terrorist attack against President Shevardnadze in August 1995. Allegedly he has found refuge in Russia. Georgian side demanded from Russia for several times Giorgadze’s extradition.
