Georgia Hails U.S. Decision to Include Chechen Warlord on Blacklist of Terrorists

(Tbilisi, August 30, 2003, Civil Georgia) – The National Security Council of Georgia supports the U.S. decision to designate the Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev as a terrorist.

?Basayev has been wanted by Georgian law-enforcement bodies for years for committing grave crimes on the territory of Abkhazia during [the armed conflict in] 1992-93,? says the statement issued by the National Security Council on August 29.

The Georgian Security Council says Georgia is ready to take an active part in combating international terrorism and to cooperate with the relevant structures of various countri!
es to reveal and punish international terrorists.

The United Nations Security Council added 38-year-old Shamil Basayev to its consolidated list of international terrorists on August 18.

UN sanctions require that countries freeze financial resources, including funds derived or generated by any undertaking owned or controlled by the Taliban, and to ensure that they are not used by the group.

On August 8 the Bush Administration designated Shamil Basayev a threat to U.S. security and U.S. citizens.
