Deadline for Nominating CEC Members Expires Today

(Tbilisi, August 25, 2003, Civil Georgia) – The Georgian political parties should propose their nominees for the Central Election Commission (CEC) before 6:00 p.m. today.

So far only the New Rights opposition party has nominated its candidate.

In his Monday radio broadcast President Shevardnadze urged the political parties to propose their nominees for the Central Election Commission (CEC) as soon as possible, adding that “the upcoming parliamentary elections should become a model for new democratic states.”

The nominee for the CEC Chairman should be proposed by the end of this week.

e OSCE expressed readiness to submit its candidate for the position of the Chairman of the Central Election Commission to the President of Georgia. Under the newly adopted Election Code, the President will appoint one of these candidates to the post of the Chairperson.

The OSCE called for public participation in identifying qualified candidates and expresses the hope that academic institutions, non-governmental organizations, civic associations and political parties will encourage qualified citizens of Georgia to put forward their names.
