Opposition Leaders, Shevardnadze to Meet Over Elections

(Tbilisi, July 8, 2003, Civil Georgia) – Meeting between the leaders of the opposition parties and President Shevardnadze is scheduled for today.

Opposition leaders and the President will discuss the US-suggested guidelines for holding fair Parliamentary elections on November 2, delivered to Georgia by the US former Secretary of State James Baker.

According to the US proposal, the CEC should be composed of five representatives of the pro-Presidential political parties, opposition parties will be represented in the commission with nine members. The Chairman of the CEC will be appointed by the OSCE.
