Russian President’s Special Representative Met With Raul Khajimba

(Tbilisi, May 7, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Valeri Loshinin, Special Representative of the President of Russia for Abkhazian Conflict Issues, visited Sukhumi on May 4-5, where he held consultations with the new prime minister of the separatist government Raul Khajimba.

As the Russian Foreign Ministry informs, the sides discussed issues of restoration of railway communication with Tbilisi through Abkhazia, rehabilitation of Enguri HPP and safe return of IDPs to Gali district, as it was agreed during the Shevardnadze-Putin meeting in Sochi on March 6-7.

Loshinin talked about the steps the Russian side is making in order to implement the Sochi agreement. He also briefed the Abkhazian side about the recent meetings with the Georgian side and leadership of the UN mission in Georgia.

Khajimba stated that the Sochi summit had very positive impact on settlement of Georgian-Abkhazian relations and contributed to decrease of tensions between Sukhumi and Tbilisi. As the Sukhumi side suggests, this would enable resumption of meetings of the Georgian-Abkhazian coordination council, activities of which were suspended for certain period of time.

Khajimba confirmed readiness of the Abkhazian side to engage in implementation of the Sochi agreement together with the Russian and Georgian sides, as well as in the constructive interaction with the UN mission in Georgia.
