NATO Secretary General Will Visit Georgia on May 14

(Tbilisi, May 6, 2003. Civil Georgia) – As Civil Georgia was told by the Georgian Foreign Ministry, on may 13 NATO Secretary General George Robertson will start his two-day visit to Georgia.

During the visit the Secretary General will have meetings with President Shevardnadze, the Chairperson of the Parliament and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia.

Currently 10-member delegation of NATO military experts is visiting Georgia and conducting meetings with the representatives of Georgian Defense Ministry.

The Georgian side introduced to the delegation results of implementation of the NATO experts, regarding transformation of the Georgian armed forces to the NATO standards. The delegation will report these results to the NATO headquarters.

“I hope that report will be positive, for we have matched all requirements” – Gela Bezhuashvili, Deputy Minister of Defense told Civil Georgia.

President Shevardnadze has made an official announcement regarding Georgia’s willingness to become a NATO member state at the NATO Prague Summit in November 2002.

The Foreign Ministry did not confirm the visit of the US Secretary of State Collin Powell the same day. As the Ministry explained, exact dates of the visit are not yet determined.
