Georgia Expressed Concern Regarding Humanitarian Situation in Iraq

(Tbilisi. March 27, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Georgian deputy representative to the UN Giorgi Volski expressed his country’s deep concern over the current situation in Iraq, in particular, its humanitarian implication.

“Notwithstanding differences in approaches within the [UN Security] Council, the emerging situation in Iraq requires the Council to display its resolve, in particular, endorsing the proposals presented by the Secretary-General and relieving millions of Iraqis from suffering,” Georgian ambassador said during the debates at the UN Security Council regarding the situation in Iraq on March 26.

He also said that it was saddened that the coalition had been compelled to use force as a last resort to address Iraq’s non-compliance with relevant Council resolutions, which had resulted in serious consequences, including those of a humanitarian nature.

“It was also vitally important to restore the effectiveness and unity within the Council,” Giorgi Volski said.
