New Phase of Pankisi Anti-Crime Operation Launched

(Tbilisi. March 3, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Today Georgian authorities officially announced the launch of the new phase of the anti-crime operation in Pankisi gorge.

“The aim of the operation is to maintain stability and security in the gorge,” President Shevardnadze said today in the interview to the state radio.

The Georgian authorities say that the operation is a preventive measure to avoid return of the Chechen militants in the gorge.

The new phase of the anti-crime operation also considers reinforcement of the Chechen, Daghestani and Ingush sections of the Russo-Georgian border.
