Plan of Pankisi Anti-Crime Operation Approved

(Tbilisi. February 28, 2003. Civil Georgia) – President Shevardnadze approved the plan of the anti-crime operation in Pankisi gorge at the meeting of National Security Council (NSC) meeting today.

According to the NSC decision Interior Minister Koba Narchemashvili will lead the anti-crime operation.

Operation will be launched in within the couple of weeks. The main goal of the operation is to maintain stability and strengthen security in the gorge, which was the safe haven for the Chechen militants in 1999-2002.

Tedo Japaridze, Secretary of the NSC told the reporters after the meeting of the Council that the additional units of the Internal Troops might be dispatched in the gorge.
