CoE Delegation Held Talks with MPs

(Tbilisi February 13, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Today delegation of the Council of Europe (CoE), which pays four-day fact-finding visit in Georgia, held meetings with the Parliamentary leadership and the representatives of the opposition Parliamentary factions.

Members of the delegation, M?ty?s E?rsi (Hungary) and Evgeni Kirilov (Bulgaria) are the co-rapporteurs for the monitoring of Georgia, which will include assessment of how Georgian authorities comply with the commitments undertaken while joining the CoE in 1999.

After the meeting with the CoE delegation MP Elene Tevdoradze of opposition United Democrats faction said “it seems that the report of the CoE monitoring delegation will be very strict towards the Georgian authorities.”

During the talks pre-election situation in the country on the eve of the Parliamentary elections, scheduled for October 2003, was the top issue during the talks.

MP Zurab Zhvania told the reporters that the CoE delegation is concerned with the increased political violence in the country, as well as with the violation of the religious minorities’ rights.

MP Elene Tevdoradze told the reporters that in June the CoE monitoring delegation will pay another fact-finding mission in Georgia and after the Parliamentary elections will prepare a report on Georgia.

More details regarding the CoE delegation’s visit will be know on February 14 after the press-conference of the delegation members.
