Burjanadze Satisfied by Visit in Russia

(Tbilisi, January 23, 2003. Civil Georgia) – “Of course it would be illusion to think that my visit in Moscow could solve all the problems between Russia and Georgia, but the main result is the attraction of attention of the Russian politicians and the society on the Abkhaz problem,” Nino Burjanadze said on January 23 speaking from Moscow in live broadcast at Rustavi 2 TV channel.

Nino Burjanadze said that during the meetings in Moscow Russian leadership “promised that the issue of the Russian passports to the population of Abkhazia would be stopped.”

“At the meeting with the head of the Russian President’s administration Alexander Voloshin [on January 23] we agreed that the recent problems regarding Abkhazia should be solved by January 28, when the meeting of Russian and Georgian Presidents is scheduled,” Nino Burjanadze said.

She also stated that the Russian MPs have already created a special commission, which will work on the problems that exists in Georgian-Russian relations.

Georgian Parliamentary Chairperson visited Russian capital on January 20-24. Reopening of the railway connection between Russia and Georgia’s breakaway region of Abkhazia and granting of the Russian citizenship to the population living in Abkhazia were the top issues discussed during the meetings with the Russian authorities.
