Abkhaz Mop-Up Georgian District in Breakaway Region

(Tbilisi, December 27, 2002. Civil Georgia) – Tbilisi-based Abkhazian government in exile reported that the Abkhaz military units carried out sweep operation in Gali district of breakaway Abkhazia on December 26 arresting up to 30 Georgian civilians living in the district.

The part of the Gali district is in the security zone under the responsibility of the CIS peacekeeping troops. Georgian authorities claim that the Abkhaz separatists carried out mop-up in this security zone.

The UN Observers Mission in Georgia was informed concerning the fact. Georgian authorities try to convince Abkhaz side to release all the detained Georgians.
