Georgian, Iranian Officials Discussed Regional Cooperation

(Tbilisi, December 24, 2002. Civil Georgia) – Georgian President Shevardnadze and Iranian President’s special envoy for the Caspian region issues Mehdi Safar discussed the perspectives of the regional cooperation during the meeting in Tbilisi on December 23.

Georgian State Chancellery (President’s Administration) reports that the Iranian envoy in the name of President Mohammad Khatami invited Eduard Shevardnadze with the official visit to Iran.

During the meeting Georgian President and Iranian official emphasized on upcoming visit of Georgian Interior and State Security Ministers in Iran. Shevardnadze and Safar expressed hope that these visit would contribute to fight against the illegal trafficking of the arms and drugs in the region.

On the same day Iran’s Ambassador to Georgia Hossein Aminian in a meeting with Georgian Minister of Foreign Affairs Irakli Menagharishivili said, “Central Asian and Caucasus countries enjoy a special status in Iran’s foreign policy and Iran gives top priority to expansion of ties with these states,” Irna news agency reported.
