Shevardnadze Alarmed with Rising Crime

(Tbilisi, Civil Georgia, December 7, 2002) – Georgian President Shevardnadze made a statement on December 6 concerning the increase of the number of crimes in the country.

The President’s statement says that after the anti-criminal operation in Pankisi gorge the criminal gangs moved from the gorge to other parts of Georgia that was followed with crime rate rise.

Eduard Shevardnadze says that the special measures will be taken in order to improve the criminal situation in the country.

Georgian State Security Ministry seized the group of terrorist suspects near Lagodekhi, which is close to Pankisi gorge in eastern Georgia on December 6. Four terrorist suspects were killed and one was injured.

Earlier group of armed men abducted father of the Russian energy giant LUKOil from southern Georgia. Director of the Automobile Construction Enterprise in Kutaisi, western Georgia, was held by the kidnappers for couple of days this week.
