A Corporal Deserts the Commando Battalion

(Tbilisi, November 27, 2002. Civil Georgia) Corporal Giorgi Shekelashvili deserted a commando battalion, which is participating in the US-funded Train and Equip Program, on November 27, taking an automatic rifle with him.

Rustavi 2 TV company reports that runaway soldier left the rifle in his relative’s house and hid away. Officials of the battalion, in which Shekelashvili is listed,did not comment on the case.

Military Procuracy of the Kvemo Kartli region, where the battalion is located, is also not commenting on reasons of Shekelashvili’s desertion. The search is under way.
