Russian Official Says Georgia Abetting Chechen Warlord

(Tbilisi, September 4, 2002, Civil Georgia) – “Georgian authorities’ statements that they do not know about the crimes committed by the Chechen warlord Ruslan Gelaev means that Georgia tries to abet the terrorist and avoid his extradition to Russia”, Alexander Yakovenko, Russian MFA Spokesman told the reporters on September 3.

Russia demands from Georgia to hand over Chechen field commander Gelaev, allegedly harboring in Georgia’s Pankisi gorge. Georgian law enforcers claim that they have no information concerning the place of dislocation of Gelaev and his fighters.

Russian MFA official also expressed concern regarding the Georgia’s refusal to hand over 13 Chechen fighters arrested by the Georgian border guards on August 3-5 near the border with Chechnya.
