Additional Units of Internal Troops not Dispatched to Pankisi Gorge Yet

(Tbilisi, Civil Georgia, August 19, 2002) – Additional units of Internal Troops are not dispatched to Pankisi Gorge yet, representative of press-service of Internal Troops told Civil Georgia.

“Though, one can not exclude any possibility”, added the representative while speaking about the deployment of additional units in the troubled gorge.

Local population of Pankisi Gorge demanded deployment of Georgian troops on 14 of August.

The deployment of additional units was presumed to take place on Saturday, but the process was delayed for the unknown reasons.

Minister for Internal Affairs visited Telavi (regional center) on Saturday to get acquainted with the situation.
