Georgia Denies Supplying Weapons to Chechens

(Tbilisi, April 5, Civil Georgia) – Georgian Defense Ministry issued a statement on April 5, denying Russian officials’ accusation that Georgia supplies weapons to Chechen rebels.

Russian Federal Security Service reported in March that Igla surface-to-air missile found in Chechnya’s Tsa-Vedeno district belonged to Georgian Defense Ministry.

“Georgian armed forces have no Igla surface-to-air missile at all. Such disinformation hampers Georgian-Russian relations,” Georgian Defense Ministry’s statement says.

In late March Georgian State Security Minister Valeri Khaburdzania did not exclude that weapon is sold to Chechen rebels from the Russian military base in Akhalkalaki, southern Georgia.
