Georgia Aspires into EU – Shevardnadze States

(Tbilisi, March 19, Civil Georgia) – “Since Georgia’s independence we never thought on other alternative than to be a European Union member,” Georgian President Shevardnadze stated at the meeting of European Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs, Human Rights, Common Security and Defense Policy on March 18.

President said in his speech that Georgia’s membership in the EU is not a “tomorrow’s perspective but not even very far future.”

“Our aspiration to the European structures does not mean that Georgia turns back on Russia, who itself tries integration into the Europe,” Eduard Shevardnadze stated.

Georgian President visits Brussels on March 18-19. He has already met Javier Solana, Secretary General of the Council of the European Union/High representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy and Lord Robertson, NATO Secretary General on March 18.

On March 19 meeting with Romano Prodi, the President of the European Commission and Christopher Patten, External Relations European Commissioner is planned.
