Georgian, Dutch Speakers Discussed Abkhaz, Election Issues

(Tbilisi, July 7, 2003, Civil Georgia) – Georgian Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze, who visits Rotterdam to participate at the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Session, met with her Dutch counterpart Frans Weisglas and Personal Representative of the Netherlands’ Foreign Minister to OSCE Daan Everts.

The sides discussed the issues of parliamentary cooperation, the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for November 2 in Georgia and the OSCE role in settlement of conflicts in Georgia.

Press office of the Georgian Parliamentary Chairperson reports that Nino Burjanadze expressed hope the international organizations, including the OSCE, will become more active in the Abkhaz conflict settlement.

Frans Weisglas and Daan Everts showed interest in the pre-election preparation in Georgia. Burjanadze stressed the importance of holding fair and free elections in the country.

Daan Everts supported Burjanadze?s request regarding dispatching of observers. The Parliament of Netherlands is ready to send its observers to Georgia 6-8 weeks before the elections.

The Personal Representative of the Dutch Foreign Minister stressed the necessity of holding free and transparent elections, saying the upcoming elections will be of crucial importance for Georgia?s image and international support.
