Political Parties Fail to Agree on CEC Composition

(Tbilisi. April 18, 2003. Civil Georgia) – At the meeting organized by the National Democratic Institute representatives of the Parliamentary factions discussed the issue of composition of the Central Election Commission (CEC) today.

The opposition Parliamentary factions demand composition of the CEC with the representatives of the political parties.

While the pro-governmental Parliamentary factions support the President?s proposal, which considers creation of the 11-member CEC, 9 of which would be nominated by the President for approval by the Parliament. Two other candidates are to be proposed by the authorities of the Abkhaz (in exile) and Adjarian Autonomous Republics.

At the same time, none of the CEC members shall be a representative of a political party. The proposal is met with strong criticism of the opposition parties.  

After the meeting, representatives of the Parliamentary factions admitted that it would be extremely difficult to reach agreement over the rule of composition of the CEC.
