Georgia not to Change its Stance Towards US Despite Russia’s Pressure

(Tbilisi. April 4, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Georgian Foreign Minister Irakli Menagharishvili told the reporters on April 3 Georgia will give “an adequate response” in case the Russian Parliament’s lower chamber will adopt statement condemning US-Georgian military agreement.

On April 3 group of Russian MPs proposed a draft decree slamming US-Georgian military agreement ratified by the Georgian Parliament in late March. According to the agreement the US government is entitled to free access and use of mutually agreed military facilities in Georgia.

The draft of the decree calls the Russian government to revise Moscow’s policy towards the Georgia’s breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which seek for “associated membership” in Russia.

“The external pressure on Georgia will not make us to change our position,” Irakli Menagharishvili said.
