Surkov Welcomes ‘Peaceful Resolution of Crisis’ in Abkhazia

Russian President’s aide, Vladislav Surkov, who mediated between the opposition and authorities in political standoff in breakaway Abkhazia, which resulted into resignation of Abkhaz leader Alexander Ankvab, welcomed “peaceful resolution of the crisis” and reaffirmed Moscow’s continued “full financial and military” support to Abkhazia.

“Resignation of President and setting of date of early presidential election was a result of negotiations between the authorities and opposition of Abkhazia. The main goal has been achieved – the crisis has been resolved peacefully,” Russia’s RIA Novosti news agency reported quoting Surkov.

“Stability has been maintained thanks to wisdom and responsibility of all the participants of the negotiation process and generous decision of Alexander Ankvab,” he said.

“All the state agencies and enterprises are functioning. There is no obstacle whatsoever for our joint work. Russia continues cooperation with brotherly Abkhazia in all directions. We are working actively with the acting president [parliament speaker Valery Bganba], with the parliament and reshuffled government of the Republic. Russia will secure providing full financial and military support to the Abkhaz people,” Surkov said.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin appointed Vladislav Surkov as his aide to oversee Moscow’s relations with Georgia’s breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in September, 2013.
