U.S. Security Doctrine: U.S. to Support Sovereignty of Russia’s Neighbors

While seeking engagement with Moscow, the U.S. will continue supporting territorial integrity of Russia’s neighbors, the national security strategy unveiled by the Obama administration on May 27 says.

On Russia the document says that the U.S. has an interest in "a strong, peaceful, and prosperous Russia that respects international norms." Nonproliferation and "confronting violent extremism, especially in Afghanistan" are named among areas in which the U.S. will seek "greater partnership" with Russia.

"While actively seeking Russia’s cooperation to act as a responsible partner in Europe and Asia, we will support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Russia’s neighbors," the document reads.

While addressing the European allies, the strategy says that the U.S. is committed to cooperate with EU "in promoting democracy and prosperity in Eastern European countries."

"We will remain dedicated to advancing stability and democracy in the Balkans and to resolving conflicts in the Caucasus and in Cyprus," the document reads.
