Public TV, 202 TV to Air Report Linked to Journalist’s Detention
Tbilisi-based private television station 202 will broadcast an investigative report on MP Koba Bekauri?s activities on September 13 at 9:30 pm local time. The report will also be aired by the Public Television on September 14 at 10 pm local time.
The report, which incriminates Koba Bekauri, a parliamentarian from the ruling National Movement party, for illegal business activities, was a major element in a scandal involving the detention of co-founder and anchor of the 202 TV, Shalva Ramishvili. Bekauri claims Ramishvili was extorting USD 100,000 in exchange for the latter killing the piece. Ramishvili says Bekauri has been intimidating him and fabricated the extortion charge.
The Georgian Public Television offered to air this report in an attempt to reach a wider audience, as the 202 TV broadcasts only in the capital, Tbilisi.
The report, which runs some 30 minutes, was prepared by an independent media studio ?Reporter,? which specializes in producing investigative journalism reports and has a contract with the 202 TV to air the studio?s reports.
