Opposition Movement to Abashidze’s Regime Disbanded

The public movement Our Adjara, major opposition to Adjara?s former leader Aslan Abashidze?s regime, suspended its activities.

?Our movement has fulfilled its mission. Adjara is free from Aslan Abashidze and his regime. Hence, the movement?s existence is not necessary,? Gela Vasadze of Our Adjara told Civil Georgia on May 13.

He said, the members of the movement intend to participate in the forthcoming local elections in Adjara. ?However, it is unclear yet whether we will participate independently, or through the party list of the National Movement ? Democrats [President Saakashvili?s party],? Gela Vasadze added.

The political movement Our Adjara, which was set up last December to confront Abashidze?s regime, has significantly contributed to peaceful ouster of Aslan Abashidze.

Currently the leaders of Our Adjara are the members of the Interim Council, which was set up to govern the Adjarian Autonomy before the snap local elections scheduled for June.

Edwards Surmanidze, one of the leaders of the Our Adjara movement, was recently appointed by the Interim Council of Adjara as acting Mayor of Adjarian capital Batumi.
