U.S. Hails Georgia’s Progress in Fight Against Trafficking

The U.S. Administration stated on September 10 that Georgia made important progress over the last three months in the fight to abolish modern day slavery – trafficking.

The United States expressed satisfaction with these achievements and called on the Georgian government to continue its struggle against trafficking.

The US Department of State’s report on Trafficking in Persons issued on June 11 said that “the Government of Georgia does not fully comply with minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking and it is not making significant efforts to do so.”

Georgia was placed on Tier 3, the lowest tier, for the governments’ failure to comply with the Acts minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking.

In the months following the issuance of the report, the Secretary of State Colin Powell reviewed the anti-trafficking efforts in those 15 countries, which were placed on Tier 3.

The Secretary determined that the governments of the 10 countries, including Georgia, are now making significant efforts to bring itself into compliance with the standard for placement on Tier 2.
