Georgian Guerrillas’ Ultimatum Expired

(Tbilisi, Civil Georgia, August 1, 2002) – Today expired Georgian guerrillas ultimatum set to the Georgian government. Guerrilla groups acting in the breakaway Abkhazian territory say they would launch actions against Abkhaz separatists in case the active steps are not taken till August 1 to solve the problem.

On August 1 the meeting of the Tbilisi-based Abkhazian government in exile is held, which supports the guerrilla movement.

Couple of thousand displaced persons from Abkhazia holds a protest rally in front of the office of the Abkhazian government in exile in the center of Tbilisi. They demand drastic measures to be taken to regain control over the breakaway Abkhazia.

The protesters also demand Aslan Abashidze’s, leader of the Adjarian Autonomous Republic, resignation from the post of the Georgian President’s personal envoy for the Abkhazian conflict settlement. Supporters of the Abkhazian government in exile claim that Abashidze lobbies Russian internets rather then Georgian.
