Georgia Wins Olympic Gold in Freestyle Wrestling
Georgia’s Vladimer Khinchegashvili won the men’s freestyle 57kg wrestling, grabbing his country’s second gold medal of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Khinchegashvili, 25, who is silver medalist of the London 2012 Olympics, captured gold after defeating Japan’s Rei Higuchi in the final.
Khinchegashvili’s gold brings Georgia’s overall medal tally at the Rio Olympics to 6 – two gold, one silver and three bronze medals.
Georgia’s Lasha Talakhadze won the gold medal in men’s over 105kg weightlifting with a world record and Irakli Turmanidze won the bronze in the same weight category.
Shmagi Bolkvadze won bronze in men’s 66kg Greco-Roman wrestling.
Lasha Shavdatuashvili gave Georgia its first medal of the Rio 2016 after winning bronze in men’s 73-kilogram category in judo and Varlam Liparteliani took silver in men’s 90 kg judo.
