Sokhumi Condemns Turkey’s Downing of Russian Warplane
Abkhaz leader, Raul Khajimba, as well as opposition parties in the breakaway region condemned downing of a Russian fighter jet near Turkey-Syria border.
Turkey said it shot down Russian warplane on November 24 after it violated the Turkish airspace. Russia said its aircraft was inside Syria when attacked.
“We consider incident involving downing of the Russian military aircraft as an attempt to undermine Russia’s efforts to suppress international terrorism. We strongly condemn this act,” Khajimba said in a written statement on November 24.
“Abkhazia expresses its full support to the Russian Federation in its fight against international terrorism,” he added.
Bloc of the Opposition Forces, which among several opposition groups also includes Amtsakhara party which last month called for Khajimba’s resignation, also released a statement condemning downing of the Russian aircraft by Turkey.
It said in a statement on November 25, that “act of aggression” against the Russian military aircraft “represents nothing but fomenting of terrorism.”
“The Bloc of Opposition Forces… declares its strong support to actions undertaken by the Russian Federation and President Vladimir Putin in fight against international terrorism,” it said.
