Senior Georgian MP Meets Iranian Parliament Speaker in Tehran

Lawmaker from the ruling Georgian Dream coalition Tedo Japaridze, who chairs parliamentary foreign relations committee, met speaker of Iranian Parliament Ali Larijani in Tehran on September 3.

“Deepening economic and trade relations were the main topic of discussion. Prospects for further development of bilateral relationship, as well as developments in the region were also discussed,” Georgian parliament’s press office said.

Iran’s Fars News Agency reported that during the meeting Iranian parliament speaker raised the issue of “big problem” of terrorism in the region and said that it is a “common threat” and fight against terrorism “needs the collective cooperation of all the regional countries.”

Larijani also said that there is a favorable ground for deepening economic ties between the two countries, including in the energy sector, Fars News Agency reported.

In Tehran MP Japaraidze also met Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ibrahim Rahimpour, who visited Georgia in March; deputy head of the Supreme National Security Council Said Iravani, and chairman of foreign affairs and national security committee in the Iranian parliament Alaeddin Boroujerdi.

During the meeting with the Georgian lawmaker, MP Boroujerdi, who last year criticized Georgia’s decision to unilaterally cancel visa-free rules for the Iranian citizens, slammed “wrong policies” of the West for, as he put it, “spreading of terrorism in the region,” according to the Iranian media reports.

During the visit to Iran, MP Japaridze was accompanied by MP from GD ruling coalition Gubaz Sanikidze, who chairs parliamentary committee for diaspora and Caucasus issues.
