Kremlin Aide in Talks with Abkhaz Govt, Opposition

Russian President’s aide, Vladislav Surkov, who arrived in Sokhumi on May 28 amid political standoff between Abkhaz leader Alexander Ankvab and opposition, is holding talks with the parties.

After a meeting with opposition leaders in breakaway region’s parliament, Surkov declined to speak with the press only saying that there is nothing yet to comment on, official Abkhaz news agency Apsnipress reported.

One of the opposition leaders, Raul Khajimba, said after the meeting: “There will be no compromise whatsoever – only the resignation.”

Opposition, which took over presidential headquarters late on May 27, is demanding Abkhaz leader Alexander Ankvab’s resignation; he had to leave the presidential building after the protesters seized the premises.

Khajimba said that Ankvab is at the Russian military base in Gudauta.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin appointed Vladislav Surkov as his aide to oversee Moscow’s relations with Georgia’s breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in September, 2013. Last time when Surkov visited Sokhumi was last week.
